The main reason for gum inflammation (gingivitis) and supportive tissue of the tooth (periodontitis) is the plaque, which consists of millions of toxic harmful bacteria that may cause gum pockets, tooth movement, or even teeth loss. There are other factors that increase the susceptibility of gum disease, including diabetes, smoking, genetic factors, immune diseases, certain medications, malnutrition and pregnancy.
Symptoms of gum inflammation include redness - swelling - bleeding when brushing teeth - bad smell- unpleasant breathe – gum abscess- recession of the gums and expose the roots causing increased tooth sensitivity- bone destruction- increased tooth mobility.
There are two types of gum treatment, surgical treatment and non-surgical treatment, and the choice between them depends on damage of the gums. The main objectives of gum treatment are to remove the plaque, reduce of swelling and reduce the depth of periodontal pockets so avoiding worsening of the gum condition.
Cosmetic gum surgery also plays a big role in drawing a perfect smile on the face, and is made to repair or correct excess gum problems, improve appearance of irregular gum shape, as well as problems with receding gums and is performed under local anesthesia.
